Who was this Eliezer Ben-Yehuda?
Born in January 1858 in Luzhky, Lithuania
He contracted tuberculosis in the winter of 1878,
his doctors forecast his demise within a year!
He described his vision:
"A clear, incandescent light flashed before my eyes
and a mighty inner voice sounded in my ears:
‘the resurrection of Israel on its ancestral soil.’"
In 1881, he left for Jerusalem,
to dedicate his remaining days
About the author: Eliezer Ben-Yehuda is the grandson of the man whose life story is told in the book.

To offer a different perspective, I'm not sure that economics of transportation will ever drive us to become Locavores. Oil is but a sparse fraction of the cost of transport and distribution.
To me it is all about community and a healthy lifestyle. I would much prefer buying local even at higher cost because of the value to our community. And if we can get local volume over the threshold of economies of scale, then will be self sustaining. Unfortunately, Locavorism today is really on the fringe. In business terms, we need more market share - and then the economics will work too.

In an earlier post, I noted that I thought that the real cost of the cash for clunkers program went well beyond the $4500 rebate per car. Edmunds.com just came out with an analysis that shows that the cost of the program, once purchases that would have occurred during that period without the rebate are taken into account, at $24,000 per car!
